Yes, the name is on purpose.
Is this actually a Discord replacement?
For jumping into voice and watching something with your friends? That's the idea. Strife brings Mumble voice, channel chat, and Helltube into one desktop window. It isn't trying to recreate every Discord feature. We have other things to procrastinate on.
Do I need to run my own servers?
You need access to a Mumble/Murmur server and a Helltube server. Run your own or join servers someone else operates. Strife is the client; it doesn't include a hosted community service or set up servers for you.
Will it work with my existing Mumble server?
Yes. Strife uses the native Mumble client for capture, audio processing, networking, and global shortcuts. Vanilla servers don't need a special plugin or a Strife-shaped hole punched in them.
Is my microphone going to sound like a leaf blower?
RNNoise microphone noise suppression is included and enabled by default. Input devices, processing, and push-to-talk bindings are configured in the native voice settings. Results still depend on your microphone. We're software, not an exorcist.
Where does my data go?
Your voice and chat go through the Mumble server you connect to; video and its account live on your chosen Helltube server. Their operators control those services. Strife keeps its settings locally. This landing page uses no analytics scripts, advertising trackers, or cookies; hosting providers may still retain request logs.
Can I look under the hood?
Please do. The source is on GitHub. The app is built with PhotinoX and the native Mumble client, with Helltube providing the video interface. Bugs belong in the issue tracker. Hot takes can stay in voice.
